Without a paddle!

26 Mar

Today the team had a welcome Beach party at Frederiksted Pool organised by the four Rotary Clubs of St. Croix.  A special thank you to Rotary West for organising the party and wonderful food. Frederiksted Beach is a beautiful beach which was used for the final scene in ‘Shawshank Redemption’ with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

During the beach party, John and Theresa Harper for the Rotary Club of St Croix Mid Isle kindly gave the team an opportunity to learn paddle-boarding on their own equipment.  This new sport that started in Hawaii requires individuals to stand on a board similar to a surfboard and to row with a single oar.  This proved to be a little tricky with many of the team enjoying splashing into the water more than standing on the board.  However with the wind on our backs and blue skies, nothing would stop the team…literally; as we discovered that our bodies made great sails which sent us and our boards deep into the Caribbean Sea without us even noticing!!!  I’m pleased to report that we did all return to the beach party safely even if it was a long paddle back!

Team members went back to their individual hosts for dinner after the beach party (this did exclude James who managed to squeeze in a game of golf with his hosts) ready for a full day tomorrow with meetings including the Department of Tourism and a tour of Gold Coast Yachts.
